Amaryllis will arrive in bud form which provides protection during delivery and helps increase vase life. If they appear closed and dehydrated after their journey, don't worry! Follow the below steps and they'll be blooming big in just a couple days.
Trim at least one inch off each stem at a sharp 45 degree angle. Amaryllis stems are hollow and prone to cracking, so be gentle. If some splitting does occur, try to trim above the split.
Fill a clean vase with fresh water and flower food and arrange your stems, taking care not to overcrowd them. A tall vase will work best to ensure your stems are supported. Change water and give a fresh trim to the stems every 2-3 days to extend vase life.
Your amaryllis stems will bloom dramatically over the next 2-3 days once hydrated. Keep them in a cool area out of direct sunlight.
Optional: Remove the pollen from the center of the flowers once bloomed to prevent staining on the petals.
The red and white colors of the Candy Cane Amaryllis come from a "genetic blip" that causes parts of the bulb to have different colors, resulting in the distinct striped appearance perfect for the holidays.
